I started out with the most simple gym set. squat/bench rack, a bench, a barbell, some weights (get a pair of each 45s, 35s, 25s, 10s, 5s, 2.5s). get a two dumbbell handles (you can use the weights you bought on them) and a curl bar. that's it you're set for basically any exercise. oh and a pair of clips for each bar.
